At Just Dashes, we take pride in restoring classic dashboards to better-than-new condition. Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Tim from Decent Garage to our shop for an in-depth tour of our restoration process. Tim is well known for his expertise in reviving classic Dodge trucks, and during his visit, we had the opportunity to help restore the dashboard of his 1991 Dodge W250 pickup—a key part of his complete overhaul project for a veteran known as The Joker.
Restoring the Hard Plastic Dash of a 1991 Dodge W250
The factory dash in Tim’s 1991 Dodge W250 was made of hard plastic, a material notorious for cracking, warping, and deteriorating over time. Unlike padded vinyl dashboards, hard plastic dashes pose a unique challenge when it comes to restoration. Fortunately, at Just Dashes, we specialize in breathing new life into these components by using our proprietary vacuum-forming process.
For this restoration, we:
- Repaired Unnecessary Holes: Since this dash was being restored as part of a custom build, there were several holes that were no longer needed. We skillfully filled these openings to create a smooth, seamless surface.
- Vacuum-Formed a New Vinyl Skin: Using our specialized techniques, we applied a fresh vinyl coating, wrapping the dash in durable, high-quality material. This process not only restored the dash’s original look but also provided a brand-new, soft-touch feel.
- Color Matching & Customization: While Tim’s W250 dash was originally black, the newly applied vinyl can be dyed to match any interior color. Whereas trying to paint over old plastic can be unreliable and regularly flake off. This means whether you have a factory black, gray, or tan interior—can fully customize their restoration.
Before & After Photos
A picture is worth a thousand words! Check out these before-and-after photos showcasing the incredible transformation of the 1991 Dodge W250 dashboard.
Why Restore a Hard Plastic Dash?
For many Dodge truck enthusiasts, finding an intact original dash is nearly impossible. After decades of exposure to UV rays, heat, and daily wear, most factory hard plastic dashboards are beyond repair. Reproduction parts often lack the correct fit and texture, making professional restoration the best option for those who want an OEM-quality appearance with modern durability.
With our restoration process, the finished product:
- Looks and feels like the original factory dash
- Eliminates cracks, warping, and structural weaknesses
- Offers full customization in terms of color
- Extends the lifespan of the dashboard for years to come
