SPRING FLING 2010

Mo'parts, mo'people and mo'cars

By Jim McGowan
April 17th dawned bright and sunny on Woodley Park in LA's San Fernando Valley! The yearly Mopar Spring Fling was bigger and better than ever, with the swap meet area hugely expanded over previous events. This two day show draws Mopar fans from all over the western states, packing this very large park with hundreds of cars and thousands of parts.

Just Dashes has been a sponsor of this event for years, and brought many restored samples of Mopar interior parts. They also had a restored '70 Challenger 440 R/T on display at their booth, featuring a completely restored Just Dashes interior. Their custom made dash pads with built-in gauge pods was a hot seller, along with the restored hard plastic door panels. Jay Leno made his yearly appearance at the event, bringing his factory experimental Turbine powered car. The crowd loved it; unfortunately, he left before we arrived so no photos. Maybe next year.

As usual, you could almost build a complete car in the swap meet area or buy a complete car in the show area. Prices were reasonable for nicely restored B and E-body cars, quite unlike several years ago.

The show field was packed with a full array of antique, classic and new Chrysler models, including some custom HEMI Challengers. It was great fun for all, and we're looking forward to the replay at the Fall Fling later in the year.

The Just Dashes crew was on hand with a great display of restored interior parts. They have been a supporter of the Spring Fling and Fall Fling and Mopars At The Strip events for years.

We walked the several long rows of parts looking for a set of 440 heads and a single groove water pump pulley for a non-power steering car. We found everything we needed and then some. GOT PAINT? This '71 'Cuda racecar was stunning, and most likely heading to Vegas later this year.

Need an engine? This trailer had a sampling of almost any power plant you could want, all rebuilt and lookin' good! Race or restore? That's the question for the fate of this '69 Belvedere. All the parts were there and the asking price was $3500.

This beautifully restored 'Cuda ragtop was on display in the swap meet area. We didn't have the nerve to ask how much he wanted for it. Fenders, we got fenders! There was no lack of sheet metal lying on the ground. Hoods, grilles, bumpers, etc. were in abundance.

Yikes! A flamed and slammed Forties Dodge two-door street rod. You don't see one of these every day. Who could ask for more than a red DAYTONA! Nuff said.

How about a '51 Dodge Wayfarer two-door. Do you think he wants to sell it? He had a for sale sign on almost every panel of the vehicle, including one drawing attention to some lower door rust. The show field was a mixture of all years, makes and models of cars, which make judging a nightmare. We guessed there were at least several hundred cars in the show area.

Now this guy is a salesman. He even let us know that the wife was all in favor of us buying one of his lifts. Ain't he nice? Here's a street Hemi project ready to go. This Belvedere has a pretty straight body and the engine is already done. Just drag and drop and then drag!

There was no lack of carburetors for sale. These were all rebuilt and ready to run. Nicely organized and all detailed were these intake and exhaust parts. Check the batch of restored K-members to the bottom left.

Looking for a real 340 GTS? I could have been yours for a mere $3900. There were parts everywhere you looked, but that fastback GM sedan to the right seemed a little out of place. I guess that's a "cross over" vehicle.

How's your rear end? This '39 Plymouth Business Coupe was stunning. It is a beautiful restoration and could have been in your driveway for $18,500.

Just Dashes brought out their restored '70 Challenger 440 R/T for display. It got a lot of attention an a few offers to change hands. What Mopar show would be complete without a '70 Hemi Challenger. This is a beautiful restoration in triple black.

How about this four-door winged warrior with skirts no less. These Fifties classics are always fun to see. This 383 Coronet 500 never left the trailer. It looked good but we didn't get the asking price.

Last, but not least, is this very cool 440, red Road Runner with the fiberglass removable hood option.
