The Fling '06
By Jim McGowan

Every year, at Johnny Carson Park in Toluca Lake, CA, the Road Kings put on their very cool show. The Road Kings are one of LA's oldest car clubs and the show is open to almost any kind of vintage vehicle. The oldest we saw there was a 1915 Model T finished in a fine patina of original rust. An example of almost every type of motor transport was present, including everything from an Amphicar to a highly customized Rambler wagon and everything in between!

The location is almost completely shaded which makes being there all day pleasant, and the park is in the heart of the NBC studios complex. This is the first time we experienced this event, and it was great. If you are in the southern California area next June, check it out. Here's a sampling of the atmosphere and a few of the cars on the show field.

The entire park was filled with great machinery. We guesstimate there was somewhere between 400 to 500 vehicles participating.

We think this is the "Grapes Of Wrath" version of a British sports rat roadster. Looks like the owner was having a lot fun decorating it. How about an early fuel-injection system fitted with modern injectors and a blower? This is was some serious engineering and it looks great.

We have tractors! Here's a totally restored Ford tractor with envious spectator wanting to take it home to plow his front yard. This twenties Model T was fitted with all the period speed parts, a RAJO head, aluminum exhaust manifold, dual coil distributor, oil pan ventilation and a Stromberg carb with primitive velocity stack. Very cool!

Restored classics were mingled with rat rods, street machines, street rods, customs and a few kit cars. It was a nice mix to keep the interest of any auto enthusiast. This '57 Buick Caballero wagon was a knock out. It was Buick's version of the GM Nomad and beautifully done.

By noon the field was crowded with spectators. The Road Kings had music, food and quite a few vendor stands to keep everyone entertained. Surf's Up! Who couldn't love a beautifully built woody.

Here's the latest craze. Have your car painted exactly like it needs paint. There are shops specializing in this look popping up all over the country. This early Fifties Ford sedan was perfect! It has the right look, the right stance and wowed the crowd.

The pedal bike from HELL! Skulls, bones and flames adorn this chain driven once upon a time bicycle. How about a Gurney-Eagle injected aluminum small-block. This motor is worth more than some of the cars on the field.

You better wear comfortable shoes when attending this show; there is lots to see and a couple of miles of cars to look at. The 'Bird is the word! Slammed, dubbed, black and cool, this '62 is a real head turner.

A completely restored Amphicar is certainly unique. These were mid-Fifties fish on Sunday, drive on Monday vehicles. Great fun as long as the water is calm and smooth. If it's in primer stripe it! This rat rod headlight is a piece of automotive art.

How about a Rambler wagon turned into a sedan delivery? Lots of metal craftsmanship went into this totally custom baby. There's nothing so cool as a traditional flathead highboy roadster. There were several outstanding examples at the show.

Who would have thought a Nash wagon could look so good? This was an incredible job on a difficult body style. All the modifications work well together. Darth Vader in dark purple. We have no idea what this custom started life as, but it certainly has a sinister look!

How many '27 Buick Town Car street rods have you seen? It's traveling in style for whoever sits in the back and a convertible for the driver. The best of both worlds. Check this suicide door 3-window in gold suede. This show draws some super cars.

We love restored flatheads with period performance parts. Check the dual carbs on the high-rise intake manifold. Tres Cool! This Chevy business coupe was flawless. The black body was arrow straight and the interior was beautiful. We wished the hood had been open to check the engine.
