THE PRIMER NATS

A eclectic mixture of rust, tattoos, pompadours and technology

No matter what they want to be called, the rock-a-billy rat rod movement is here to stay. Over Labor Day weekend 2006, the Primer Nationals car and motorcycle show was held at the Ventura Fair Grounds in Ventura, CA. Intrigued by this rust loving phenomenon, we cruised to the show hoping to be surprised. We were not only surprised, but we were entertained as well. The rat rod enthusiasts certainly have a far-reaching sense of humor! Hand grenade shift balls, open end wrench carb linkage, no floorboards, major rust through holes in the body panels and more greeted us on the show field.

There was a vendor area behind the car show that was primarily motorcycle parts and what we call trash and trinkets. Lots of T-shirts and other miscellaneous stuff filled several isles, but we found no car parts we were interested in dragging home. We already have enough rusty junk! But the people watching was great. Most of the ladies have adopted the fashion look of the Forties and added tattoos to fit the current times. We went on Sunday and apparently the attendance was slightly down from Saturday, but there was still lots to see and appreciate. While some of the vehicles might not be beautiful, we found lots of unique solutions to various kinds of automotive problems. Check out the photos, you'll see some for yourself.

This old Mercury certainly looks sinister head on, but check out the extensive custom work done on the front end. The semi-gloss primer finish is referred to as "suede".

Old #518 was there in all its rusty splendor. "Special thanks to Viagra, Geritol, Carters and Depends" was painted on the sides of this Model T. It featured small-block Chevy power without mufflers and lots of rust holes. How about suicide back doors for this slammed '56 Buick custom? This is truly a beautiful car with a lot of time and money invested.

Ever been greeted by the rat king of the rat rods? He is sitting on his throne atop a high-rise intake and purple engine block. Another beautiful "in the weeds" Merc smothered in flames! This car attends many southern California shows and is always a knock out.

This slick little flathead powered roadster has the "in process" look, and might never be finished. We loved the spider web radiator grille and beautifully detailed engine. A radically chopped Model A sports a Fifties Olds Rocket motor, Q-jet carb and home made rocket ram air system. The favorite tool of the rat rod generation is the Sawzall®!

An on the ground four-door Merc features a set of lakes style side pipes with huge trumpets at the ends. Shaved handles, chopped top and custom grille are surrounded by two tones of primer and hot flame treatment. Here's a Mid-Fifties Imperial in "on the floor purple" with skirts and a custom interior. Just the chrome plating on this beauty cost as much as a Honda.

The Ventura Fair Grounds hosts many car shows each season. This show was a fun and different adventure. This very cool Ford pickup started life as a hardtop. This great California weather and the Sawzall® accomplished this.

Another Chrysler decked out in primer with subtle skulls, rust and mystical stuff painted over it. This was a very intricate paint scheme as well as an interesting palette. A long, low, and lean and mean Model T Turtleback, powered by a straight six. Check out those headers! When the front of this car was entering the show, the back was still out on the freeway.

This is a rare ALMQUIST flat-head blower with a circular air induction chamber. The chamber narrows as it enters the engine, increasing the airflow. Check the throttle linkage arrangement. It seconds as a few extra wrenches. This stunning Ford sedan has all the right goodies. Everyone, including us couldn't help snapping a picture of it.
