SUPER ROD-THE SEQUEL!
By Jim McGowan
Last year we had a visit from Jeff Tann at Super Rod, a magazine published by Buckaroo Publishing, and at that time we restored a '79 Trans Am center console. This informative article, in full color, appeared in the December 2002 issue.
This year Brad Ocock, also working for Super Rod and Truck Builder magazines, returned to cover the restoration of a '67 GTO/LeMans dash pad and our latest creation, a full dash pad with gauge pods for the 1968 through 1972 GM/GMC trucks. Brad resides in Florida and covers the southeast area of the country for Buckaroo.
Irwin Tessler, owner of Just Dashes guided him through the entire restoration process, and like everyone who has witnessed the procedure was amazed! We began by examining the pad for damage and listed the process necessary to bring it back to concours condition. Brad fired off a couple of rolls of film during the four hour visit and thoroughly enjoyed watching a basically ruined dash pad come back to life. He also captured the installation of a prototype truck dash with gauge pods and will show you the full feature in an upcoming issue of Truck Builder.

As always, the part to be restored is carefully examined by the experts at Just Dashes, and a course of action recorded on the form that will follow the part through the entire resto process. Here Brad and Irwin check out the damaged '67 Pontiac dash pad.

Irwin is explaining the way the restoration process is conducted while Brad is taking notes for his article in Super Rod. The amount of hand work necessary to produce a concours restoration always astounds editors who are experiencing the procedure for the first time.

Brad recorded the step-by-step restoration of the dash pad. Here a coat of industrial grade adhesive is being sprayed on the finished foam surface. After the glue gets tacky the pad will be ready for a new layer of vinyl.

Brad is shooting the installation of a prototype full-dash pad with gauges for the 1968-'72 GM trucks. This product will be introduced in early 2003 and is sure to be a hit with truck enthusiasts. Look for the article in Truck Builder magazine.

Photography is sometimes difficult as shown here. Most dash pads are long and skinny, making shooting descriptive photos a tricky chore.
